British Pound posts modest gains against Japanese Yen as BoE decision takes centre stage

  • GBP/JPY posts a modest gain, with the Japanese Yen weakening against most major counterparts.
  • Sterling draws support from anticipated BoE rate increases and reduced UK fiscal worries.
  • The Yen finds little backing from the BoJ's hawkish guidance or warnings of intervention.

GBP/JPY trades near 211.87 at the time of writing. The cross is up 0.44% on Monday, having briefly exceeded 212. Hawkish signals from the Bank of Japan (BoJ) have failed to lift the Japanese Yen (JPY). The British Pound (GBP), by contrast, benefits from reduced fiscal uncertainty after the UK’s Autumn Budget. Traders are now looking ahead to this week’s Bank of England (BoE) monetary policy announcement.

Markets have fully priced in a 25-basis-point (bps) rate increase when the BoE delivers its decision on Thursday. Surging energy costs are fuelling inflation, while a steady labour market and resilient economic growth give policymakers scope to increase borrowing costs.

Market conviction that “high energy prices leave the Bank of England no alternative but to hike rates on Thursday” is supporting Sterling, which ING analysts describe as “trading reasonably well,”. In their view, “a 25bp rate hike to 4.00% looks like a done deal,” while “upside economic surprises, UK fiscal policy seemingly heading in the right direction and warmer ties with the EU,” provide additional support for sentiment towards the Pound.

Looking ahead, OCBC argues that "GBP resilience should extend into early 2027 as fiscal discipline, resilient growth and political stability remain supportive." The bank nevertheless cautions that "with substantial BoE tightening already priced in, further gains will require increasingly positive UK surprises."

Wide yield differentials continue to weigh on the Japanese Yen (JPY), with interest rates outside Japan still substantially higher. The BoJ’s hawkish position has offered little relief, as high energy prices are also prompting other central banks to move towards tighter policy.

Friday’s BoJ decision left interest rates at 1.25%, in line with broad expectations. The central bank indicated that further increases would follow if economic activity and prices develop as projected. Its full quarterly outlook report, published on Monday, said underlying inflation had moved towards 2%, with gradual progress in anchoring it at that level. Further rate increases would likely help moderate price pressures and support consumption, the BoJ added.

Fresh intervention warnings also provided little relief for the Yen. On Monday, Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama again said authorities were prepared to respond to disorderly currency movements. She also reiterated that Japan’s joint foreign exchange statement with the US remained in force.
