Every market report opens with the Nifty and the Sensex. They look alike, but they are built differently. This guide explains what each index measures, how to read a daily move, and when the Indian market is open relative to the rest of the world.
- What the Nifty 50 and the Sensex measure and how they differ
- How to read points and percentage moves
- What breadth and India VIX add to the picture
- The market hours in IST, and how they relate to Tokyo, London and New York

Two indices, two exchanges

- Nifty 50: 50 large companies listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
- Sensex: 30 large companies listed on the BSE (formerly the Bombay Stock Exchange).
- Both are weighted by free-float market capitalisation, so larger companies move the index more.
- Financial services is among the largest sector weights in both.
Points versus percentages
A move in index points means little without the base. Always convert it to a percentage.
Look beyond the headline
- Breadth: Check the Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100. On 23 October they fell 2.21% and 2.94% while the Nifty fell 0.39%. Broad stress was bigger than the headline.
- India VIX: A gauge of expected volatility. It rose about 6% on the same day.
- Flows: FII and DII net buying or selling indicates who is driving the market.
- Global cues: GIFT Nifty and overnight US markets often set the opening tone.

Market hours in IST
The NSE and BSE cash market opens at 9:15 am and closes at 3:30 pm IST, after a short pre-open session. Global markets overlap partly: Tokyo before and during the early session, London in the afternoon, and New York in the Indian evening and night.

A simple daily routine

- Check overnight US markets and GIFT Nifty.
- Note crude, the dollar and USD/INR.
- Read the Nifty and Sensex move in percentages.
- Compare with midcap, smallcap and VIX for breadth.
- Look at the FII and DII flow data after the close.
FAQ
Which index is bigger, Nifty or Sensex?

Why are their daily percentage moves similar?
Their constituents overlap heavily, so they usually move together.
What does a rising India VIX mean?
Traders expect larger swings. It does not predict direction.
Can I trade the indices directly?
Many brokers offer products tracking indices. Check which are available to you and the rules that apply in your jurisdiction.
