The Real Interest Rate: Are Your Savings Actually Earning Anything?

The rate printed on a certificate or deposit is not the real return. After inflation the verdict can change completely. Plus four buckets for organizing savings.

If you put 100,000 Rupee

in an account paying 19% while prices rise 14%, your purchasing power did not grow 19%. The real return is what remains after prices take their share.

The formula

Quick estimate: real rate ≈ nominal rate − inflation. More exact: (1 + rate) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1.

Example with September 2026 numbers
The central bank's overnight deposit rate is 19% and core inflation is 14.1%. The quick method gives 4.9 points. The exact method: 1.19 ÷ 1.141 − 1 = about 4.3%. Against urban inflation of 13.9% the result is about 4.5%.

When is the real rate negative?

When inflation exceeds the nominal return. Your balance grows in numbers and shrinks in purchasing power. That is why returns should always be judged in real terms, not nominal ones.

Three common mistakes

  • Comparing a certificate's yield with last month's inflation alone. Look at the trend over several months instead.
  • Forgetting taxes and fees. The real return is calculated after every deduction that applies to you.
  • Treating official inflation as a mirror of your own basket. Try computing the share you spend on each category.

Four buckets for savings

This is an educational map, not an investment recommendation. The right split depends on your goal, your time horizon and your tolerance for swings.

  • Liquidity: for emergencies. It keeps money ready but loses to inflation over the long run.
  • Fixed income: certificates, deposits and treasury bills. A known return whose real value depends on inflation.
  • Real assets: gold and property. They move with the dollar and prices but fluctuate.
  • Equities: a share in company profits. Higher potential return, with more volatility and a longer horizon.
