Trading comfortably around 0.7250 on Monday, USD/CHF remains within easy reach of its two-week high of 0.7270 as the US Dollar (USD) retains Friday’s advance against the Swiss Franc (CHF). There is little directional conviction in markets, however. Ahead of the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy decision later this week, investors are hesitant to take sizeable USD positions.

According to ING analyst Christ Turner, “interest rate spreads have moved a little against the Dollar as the recent US tech wobble has pared back Federal Reserve tightening expectations.” He nevertheless notes that “energy prices remain at their highs,” and that “the arrival of a third US aircraft carrier group in the Gulf makes further escalation in the Middle East more likely than not,” factors which ING believes should continue to support the Dollar despite the change in interest rate market pricing.
At 0.8250, USD/CHF maintains a modest upward bias following Friday’s sharp recovery from the 0.8190 region. Momentum indicators remain supportive: the Relative Strength Index (14) sits just above its midpoint, while the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) registers a small positive reading.
The high reached on 19 and 20 October, around 0.8270, is likely to provide a test for buyers. Beyond that lie the lows of 13 and 14 October, near 0.8315, followed by the year-to-date high of around 0.8400, recorded in mid-October.
During Monday’s Asian session, support around 0.8230 has contained selling attempts, barring a move towards Friday’s previously mentioned low of 0.8191. A bearish move below that level would put the 1 September peak of 0.8156 in focus.
