Silver: Key Questions Answered

Historically a store of value and a means of exchange, Silver remains a widely traded precious metal among investors. While it is less popular than Gold, traders may choose Silver for its intrinsic value, to diversify their portfolios or as a possible hedge against high inflation. Exposure can be gained by purchasing physical Silver coins or bars, or by trading investment vehicles such as exchange-traded funds, which follow its price in international markets.

A broad range of influences can drive movements in Silver prices. Its safe-haven status means geopolitical unrest or concerns over a severe recession can lift prices, though the effect is less pronounced than for Gold. Lower interest rates generally support Silver because it pays no yield. With Silver quoted in US Dollars (USD) as XAG/USD, movements in the currency also matter: Dollar strength tends to restrain prices, while a weaker Dollar is likely to push them higher. Investment demand, recycling rates and mine supply also play a part; Silver is considerably more abundant than Gold.

Among metals, Silver has one of the highest levels of electrical conductivity, exceeding both Copper and Gold. This makes it widely used in industry, notably electronics and solar energy. Prices can rise when demand surges, whereas weaker demand generally weighs on them. Developments in the US, Chinese and Indian economies can also drive price fluctuations. Large industrial sectors in the US and, especially, China use Silver in a variety of processes, while Indian consumers’ demand for Silver jewellery is another important influence on prices.

Given their similar roles as safe-haven assets, Silver generally moves in the same direction as Gold and typically gains when Gold prices advance. Their relative valuations may be assessed using the Gold/Silver ratio, which measures the number of ounces of Silver needed to equal the value of one ounce of Gold. A high reading may be interpreted by some investors as a sign that Silver is undervalued or Gold is overvalued. Conversely, a low reading might indicate that Gold is undervalued compared with Silver.
