With the US Federal Reserve (Fed) meeting over and markets subdued, USD/CHF trades at 0.8285 on Thursday, leaving the US Dollar (USD) modestly higher against the Swiss Franc (CHF). The near-term uptrend remains intact: Wednesday’s retreat from 0.8313 found support above earlier highs around 0.8270.

Interest rates were held steady by the Fed on Wednesday, as expected, but Chairman Kevin Warsh declined to confirm a rate increase in December. Expressing confidence that monetary policy was beginning to take effect, Warsh suggested the bank might bring inflation back to its 2% target without undermining growth or needing to “throw people out of work”. Markets interpreted those comments as somewhat dovish.
Pressure on the Swiss franc increased after Wednesday’s ZEW Survey in Switzerland showed that October’s expectations for the economy over the next six months had fallen to their weakest level since March.
Mixed momentum signals accompany a modest upward bias in USD/CHF at 0.8285. On the 4-hour chart, the Relative Strength Index (14) remains in positive territory at 56. However, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator has edged below zero, suggesting that the advance is losing pace rather than signalling an outright reversal.
The 19 October high around 0.8270 continues to limit selling pressure. For now, that area is preventing a move towards the 25 October low near 0.8230 and the important support zone between 0.8180 and 0.8190.
Wednesday’s high near 0.8315 provides the first resistance on the upside. A break above it would bring the 17-month highs around 0.8400 into view.
