A third straight day of gains against the dollar took sterling to around 1.3400 in Friday's Asian session, before it went on to test six-week highs. A modest advance brought AUD/USD close to 0.7035. EUR/USD, meanwhile, was around 1.1120 on Thursday, down 0.28% at that stage, after touching a 17-month low of 1.1105.

Faster US economic growth in the third quarter surpassed market expectations, with the annual rate reaching 3.4%. The Bureau of Economic Analysis released its first estimate on Thursday, putting growth above the 3.2% forecast and the second quarter's 2.2% expansion.
Transfers flagged by on-chain data prompted an urgent investigation into a possible security issue at Binance. On Thursday, $2.77 billion moved across five blockchains from addresses labelled as the exchange's hot wallets to unconfirmed wallets. While founder and former chief executive Changpeng Zhao considered a hack likely, he said user funds remained safe.
Nearly $6 billion in outflows were cited in later reports, which put potential exposure at $1.45 billion in Bitcoin, $875 million in Ethereum and additional amounts in other assets. Assisted by stablecoin issuers, Binance said it had frozen $3 billion in crypto assets. Efforts to trace and freeze more assets involved law enforcement, blockchain intelligence firms and industry partners. Binance reiterated that user funds remained safe.
Freezes initially attributed to Tether and Circle amounted to $971 million and $873 million, respectively. Separate updates later gave different figures: Tether chief executive Paolo Ardoino reported $1.567 billion frozen in USDT, while Circle co-founder Jeremy Allaire reported $800 million in USDC. These individual disclosures did not reconcile the breakdown of the $3 billion announced by Binance.
Liquidations reached roughly $600 million in one hour as Bitcoin and Ethereum first slipped below $80,000 and $2,300, respectively, according to CoinGlass. The 24-hour total was above $1.50 billion by early Friday. Following a 4% fall on Thursday, Bitcoin had dropped below $77,000; later on Friday, it was around $78,000, with Ethereum close to $2,200.
Renewed supply-disruption concerns supported a third successive daily rise in WTI crude on Friday, taking it above $103 per barrel and close to five-month highs. The move followed reports of further attacks on vessels seeking to cross the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier in the day, the US benchmark had been quoted around $101.85 during Asian trade and $102.20 in the early European session.
Six missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabian oil facilities, airports and a military position were claimed on Thursday by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis, according to Xinhua. They named the Ras Tanura refinery among the targets.
Prices were at their highest since April, according to Rabobank strategist Bas van Geffen. Nearly 12% of global capacity to refine gasoline, diesel and other fuels had also been put out of operation by the wars in Iran and Ukraine, the bank estimated.
Supply constraints ahead of the 2026/27 winter pushed Europe's benchmark TTF natural gas price above €100/MWh for the first time since 2022, according to ING's Warren Patterson. Disrupted LNG flows from the Persian Gulf and outages in Norway were limiting availability.
For several buyers, QatarEnergy had reportedly prolonged force majeure until the year's end. At the same time, EU gas storage remained just below 75% full, and forecasts suggested that Northwest Europe would experience colder-than-usual weather from the following week.
Switching from gas to coal already made economic sense in the power sector, Patterson said. He also highlighted indications of softer industrial demand, including a reduction in gas consumption by European chemical producers. Over the latest reporting week, investment funds added 14.3 TWh to net long TTF holdings, bringing the position to 207.4 TWh. Gross long positions grew by a little more than 20 TWh, accompanied by a small increase in gross short positions.
After raising rates in September, the Bank of Japan opted on Friday to keep its short-term interest rate at 1.25%. Commerzbank's Michael Pfister said the accompanying statement indicated, for the first time, that underlying price pressures had attained the 2% inflation target.
Further policy-rate increases and adjustments to monetary accommodation remained the bank's stated intention, according to TD Securities' Prashant Newnaha. It also retained its description of financial conditions as accommodative. A tight labour market featured in the assessment, alongside inflation risks stemming from wages, foreign-exchange developments and AI-related demand.
Following the announcement, yen gains sent USD/JPY further below the mid-157.00s in Asian trade, marking the pair's third daily decline in succession. A two-day run of gains in EUR/JPY also came to an end, with the pair trading around 176.10.
Despite discussions about an increase, Thursday's European Central Bank vote unanimously favoured keeping all three key rates steady: the deposit rate at 2.50%, the main refinancing rate at 2.65% and the marginal lending rate at 2.90%. President Christine Lagarde said policymakers regarded a measured approach as appropriate. They did not commit to a rate path, and a further increase in December remained possible.
With energy prices above the ECB's baseline assumptions, inflation faced upside risks while growth faced downside risks. Underlying inflation was still broadly stable, the bank said, and wages had shown no material second-round response to the energy shock. Expectations for longer-term inflation stayed close to 2%. For the months remaining in 2026, the bank's wage tracker suggested negotiated wage growth of 2.5%-2.8%.
Although early pricing-chain data showed fresh upward pressure and energy costs were having greater indirect effects, Lagarde identified no further second-round effects beyond those already reflected in existing projections. Headline inflation would stay well above target over the coming quarters, she said. Demand was being restrained by higher financing costs, weaker confidence, fiscal uncertainty and tighter financial conditions. Supporting activity, however, were AI investment, government spending and the prospect of an export recovery.
Relative to the September baseline, recent increases in bond yields would reduce 2027-2028 growth by around 1 percentage point and inflation by 90 basis points, according to anonymously disclosed internal estimates cited by Rabobank's Bas van Geffen. In a separate Bloomberg interview on Friday, Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel said decisive ECB action would follow if required to return inflation to target. He singled out higher energy costs as a key contributor to renewed consumer-price growth.
Lagarde's departure in February 2027 was also announced by the Governing Council. According to ING's Francesco Pesole, she would step down with effect from 7 February, with Pablo Hernández de Cos and Klaas Knot among the leading candidates to replace her.
A preliminary Eurostat estimate published on Friday put third-quarter eurozone GDP growth at 0.4%. Expectations had been for a 0.2% increase.
