Crypto Today: Brief rebound leaves Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP holding gains

  • $83,000 remains below Bitcoin as its recovery strengthens and bulls gradually return.
  • A firm cluster of medium- to long-term moving averages supports Ethereum’s modest advance.
  • $1.35 approaches for XRP as buyers strengthen their position and seek to maintain control of the trend.

Bitcoin (BTC) is trading above $83,000. Cryptocurrency prices are advancing broadly on Wednesday, with major altcoins Ethereum (ETH) and Ripple (XRP) following a similar pattern. At $2,455, ETH, the largest smart contract token, is rising for a second consecutive day. XRP is also edging up towards $1.35.

In its weekly Ahead of The Curve report, K33 Research said: “Bitcoin spent another week in tight consolidation with shrinking volumes, soft derivatives activity and narrowing volatility,” adding, “Price kept drifting lower and briefly dipped below $80,000 on Thursday as equities sold off on a hot Consumer Price Index (CPI) print and a steep semiconductor sell-off.”

63 on sentiment index signals steady risk appetite

At 63 on Wednesday, the Fear & Greed Index remains in Greed territory, compared with 55 a day earlier. The reading points to sustained appetite for digital assets. Investors remain prepared to increase risk exposure in anticipation of a renewed uptrend, despite macroeconomic headwinds across the wider crypto market.

Tuesday’s inflows into Bitcoin spot Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) totalled $23 million, sharply below Monday’s $527 million. Capital flows were mixed, according to SoSoValue data. Ethereum spot ETFs saw $26 million leave on Tuesday, prolonging a five-day bearish run.

Activity in XRP spot ETFs has been uneven: outflows reached $105,000 on Thursday and $2.5 million on Friday last week, followed by used activity on Monday and Tuesday.

The K33 report also noted: “Low participation remains the dominant theme, and we still view this regime as similar to the dormant 2023 recovery,”

$83,187: Bitcoin advances in technical trading

At $83,187, Bitcoin retains a bullish short-term bias, trading above its key Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs). Below the spot price sit the 50-day EMA around $80,780, the 100-day EMA near $77,343 and the 200-day EMA near $76,098. Together, they indicate an underlying upward trend, with additional backing from the SuperTrend line at about $79,664.

The momentum picture is less clear-cut. A Relative Strength Index (RSI) reading just above 53 suggests mild buying pressure. However, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) is still negative, implying a gradual advance rather than a forceful rally.

Daily chart: BTC/USDT

The first support level is the 50-day EMA at $80,780. A deeper retreat would bring the SuperTrend level at $79,664 into focus as the next floor. Further down, a wider demand zone spans the 100-day EMA at $77,343 and the 200-day EMA at $76,098. A more substantial correction would be expected to draw buyers to this area.

The daily chart identifies no immediate overhead resistance from indicators, leaving price action itself as the likely driver of additional gains. Continued respect for the layered EMA support zone, alongside a stabilising MACD and a gradually rising RSI, would signal a sustained upward move in BTC.

$2,455 Ethereum and $1.34 XRP: Technical outlook points to renewed bullish trends

At $2,455, Ethereum sits between key moving averages. The 100-day EMA at $2,363 and the 200-day EMA at $2,307 remain below the price, supporting the broader constructive structure. Overhead, the 50-day EMA at $2,481 and the SuperTrend line at $2,676 continue to limit gains. With medium-term support intact but short-term trend resistance proving difficult to reclaim, the near-term bias is neutral to mildly bearish.

Momentum readings reinforce the lack of conviction. The RSI is close to a neutral 44, while the MACD remains below zero. Unless Ethereum breaks decisively above the 50-day EMA, attempted advances could encounter selling pressure.

Daily chart: ETH/USDT

A stronger recovery first requires a break through the 50-day EMA at $2,481, the immediate resistance level. Beyond that lies a more formidable obstacle at the SuperTrend line near $2,676. Support initially comes from the 100-day EMA at $2,363, followed by a deeper structural floor at the 200-day EMA around $2,307. Closing below the latter on a daily basis would materially undermine the broader trend’s bullish undertone and leave the pair vulnerable to additional losses.

Trading at $1.34, XRP faces near-term constraints below the 50-day and 200-day EMAs around $1.38. Although the pair has recovered the 100-day EMA at $1.34 as immediate support, the descending resistance trend line near $1.70 and the SuperTrend line at $1.47 still restrict the wider structure.

Momentum also points to limited upside. With a negative MACD reading below zero and the RSI around 44, buying pressure appears muted rather than indicative of a decisive bullish reversal.

Daily chart: XRP/USDT

The first hurdle is the 50-day EMA at $1.38, closely followed by the 200-day EMA at $1.38. This narrow resistance cluster needs to be overcome before XRP can target the SuperTrend resistance at $1.47 and, subsequently, the broader descending trendline above that zone.

The 100-day EMA at $1.34 offers immediate downside support. A daily close beneath it would leave the pair exposed to deeper consolidation. The bearish bias would strengthen while the price remains below the higher EMAs and the prevailing downtrend line.

Cryptocurrency pricing: Frequently asked questions

Demand and adoption among market participants can shift when a token launches. A crypto exchange listing increases an asset’s liquidity and brings additional participants into its network. These developments are generally positive for a digital asset’s price.

In a hack, an attacker uses exploits, bugs or other methods to seize a large quantity of an asset from a DeFi bridge, an exchange’s hot wallet or another crypto platform. The stolen tokens are then moved off exchange platforms, ultimately to be sold or exchanged for other cryptocurrencies or stablecoins. Widespread panic often follows, triggering a sell-off in the affected assets.

The direct effect on the US Dollar is the main channel through which macroeconomic events, including interest rate decisions by the US Federal Reserve, influence crypto assets. Higher interest rates generally weigh on Bitcoin and altcoin prices; lower rates tend to have the opposite effect. A fall in the US Dollar index makes risk assets and the leverage used to trade them cheaper, which in turn lifts cryptocurrency prices.

By cutting miners’ block rewards in half, halvings constrain an asset’s supply and are therefore generally viewed as bullish events. If demand stays constant while supply falls, the asset’s price rises.
