Silver: Key Questions

Historically a store of value and medium of exchange, Silver remains a heavily traded precious metal among investors. Gold attracts more interest, but traders may choose Silver for portfolio diversification, its intrinsic value or its potential to hedge against high inflation. Investors can hold the physical metal as coins or bars. Alternatively, they can gain exposure through instruments such as exchange-traded funds, which track Silver’s price in international markets.

A broad range of influences can drive Silver prices. Its safe-haven appeal can lift prices during geopolitical instability or concerns about a deep recession, though the effect is less pronounced than for Gold. Lower interest rates also tend to support Silver because it pays no yield. With the metal priced in US dollars (XAG/USD), movements in the US Dollar (USD) are another key influence: dollar strength tends to restrain Silver prices, while dollar weakness is likely to lift them. Investment demand, mining supply and recycling rates can also shape prices. Silver is far more abundant than Gold.

With electrical conductivity among the highest of all metals, exceeding that of Copper and Gold, Silver has extensive industrial uses, notably in electronics and solar energy. Rising demand can push prices higher, whereas falling demand tends to weigh on them. Economic developments in the US, China and India can also generate price swings. Large industrial sectors in the US and, especially, China use Silver in a variety of processes. In India, consumer demand for Silver jewellery is another important influence on prices.

Given their similar roles as safe-haven assets, Silver generally tracks Gold and typically rises when Gold advances. Investors may use the Gold/Silver ratio to assess the metals’ relative valuations. It measures the number of ounces of Silver equivalent in value to one ounce of Gold. Some investors may view a high reading as a sign that Silver is undervalued or Gold is overvalued. A low reading, by contrast, may indicate that Gold is undervalued relative to Silver.
