AI Data Center Deployment Momentum Draws Investor Attention, Qualcomm's Stock Price Climbs To A Two-Month High!

Qualcomm announced a cross-generation product collaboration with Amazon, where the two will jointly provide customized chips for large-scale AI data centers and work around AI inference. Additionally, the two companies will jointly develop optical interconnect solutions supporting up to 1.6T speeds, as well as next-generation technologies for the future. Under this long-term partnership, Amazon may purchase Qualcomm AI data center chips and related products worth up to $60 billion. Under this partnership, Qualcomm has offered warrants. The company has granted 25 million Qualcomm stock warrants at a strike price of $161.26 per share, giving Amazon the right to purchase at that price, corresponding to $4 billion, expiring on September 3, 2036. This partnership is undoubtedly a major victory for Qualcomm.

This partnership is important because Qualcomm has long been regarded primarily as a smartphone chip company. Its business is highly dependent on the smartphone market, and compared to AI data centers, the smartphone market grows more slowly and has stronger demand cycles. In addition, in recent years, Qualcomm's core smartphone business has also faced demand imbalance for various reasons. Investors have also consistently viewed Qualcomm's exposure to Apple's business as a drag, as Apple has long struggled to develop its own modem.

Meanwhile, compared to Nvidia, Broadcom, and other semiconductor stocks, Qualcomm's participation in the AI infrastructure boom driven by hyperscale cloud service providers has been relatively limited. Therefore, in this AI-driven market, Qualcomm's stock price has consistently lagged behind most semiconductor industry stocks.

The agreement with Amazon changes that narrative, as it not only brings Qualcomm a heavyweight hyperscale cloud service partner but also provides a path to break free from dependence on the smartphone business and achieve clearer business diversification. Today, the company is targeting AI inference workloads, and its focus on high-efficiency processing may help it gain a foothold in the data center sector, reigniting investor interest in the stock.

Qualcomm's partnership with Amazon comes at a critical time. Qualcomm's third-quarter revenue fell 4% to $9.95 billion, and net profit fell from $2.67 billion in the same period last year to $2 billion, due to a 20% drop in phone sales, rising input costs, and supply chain pressures dragging down performance. The company also released a lower-than-market profit outlook for the fourth quarter.

Market Insight:

Currently, Qualcomm's performance is still concentrated in traditional sectors such as smartphones, and the company is eager to transition into high-prosperity sectors such as data centers. Qualcomm has successively acquired Nuvia and Alphawave, thereby building four segments for the data center sector: custom ASICs, connectivity, AI accelerators, and server CPUs.
