Ethereum Price Forecast: ETH falls as ETF outflows return

  • Ethereum falls alongside the broader crypto market but holds above $2,200 short-term support.
  • US-listed ETH spot ETFs recorded $100 million in outflows on Thursday, signaling institutional repositioning.
  • Ethereum remains largely in bearish hands with the MACD deeply oversold.

Ethereum (ETH) edges lower toward the short-term $2,200 psychological demand area on Friday. The smart contract token continues to sustain a bearish trend, down roughly 8% from the monthly high of $2,442. Moreover, ETH upside remains structurally capped by dynamic indicators and major moving indicators.

Regulation concerns trigger broader crypto sell-off

The ongoing correction can largely be attributed to growing crypto and Artificial Intelligence (AI) concerns in the United States (US) after the Democrats swept Republicans in the midterm elections.

With Democrats taking over Congress, many fear stricter crypto regulations could reverse the gains made by President Donald Trump’s administration since 2024. The CLARITY Act already stalled in the Senate in September after it failed to gain Democratic support.

“Elizabeth Warren, one of the industry’s most vocal critics, is expected to take over the Senate Banking Committee when the new Congress convenes in January, although the appointment has not yet been formally confirmed,” Crypto Finance said in a written analysis report, adding, “Warren has consistently advocated for tighter oversight of crypto, potentially making the path towards regulatory clarity longer and more restrictive than the industry had hoped.”

Ethereum ETFs see outflows

Interest in digital asset investment products has continued to fade in recent weeks as institutions reposition amid macro concerns like elevated inflation, geopolitical tensions and other factors. US-listed Ethereum spot Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) recorded $100 million in outflows on Thursday, reinforcing risk-off sentiment in the crypto market. Apart from the $53 million outlier inflows on Wednesday, ETH ETFs have been bearish since October 26. If withdrawals persist, the bearish grip on Ethereum will continue to drive the sell-off in the coming days and weeks.

Technical analysis: Ethereum bears retain control

Ethereum trades at $2,227, retaining a bearish near‑term bias as it sits below the 50‑day, 100‑day and 200‑day Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs) clustered between roughly $2,312 and $2,397. Price is also capped beneath the Bollinger Bands’ middle line at $2,334, while the lower band at $2,183 offers nearby support, hinting at ongoing downside pressure within a broad consolidation.

The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) in the negative region and the Relative Strength Index (RSI) around 38 point to weak demand, suggesting any rebound could struggle against the dense overhead structure.

Initial support lies at the rising trendline break area near $2,210, followed by the Bollinger Bands’ lower band at $2,183, where sellers may begin to book profits if reached. On the topside, immediate resistance appears at the 200‑day EMA at $2,312, aligned closely with the Bollinger middle band at $2,334, before the 100‑day EMA at $2,348 and the 50-day EMA at $2,397 further reinforce the bearish cap. A daily close above the latter would be needed to ease selling pressure and open the way toward the higher trendline resistance around $2,434 and the Bollinger upper band at $2,486.

Ethereum FAQs

Ethereum is a decentralized open-source blockchain with smart contracts functionality. Its native currency Ether (ETH), is the second-largest cryptocurrency and number one altcoin by market capitalization. The Ethereum network is tailored for building crypto solutions like decentralized finance (DeFi), GameFi, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), etc.

Ethereum is a public decentralized blockchain technology, where developers can build and deploy applications that function without the need for a central authority. To make this easier, the network leverages the Solidity programming language and Ethereum virtual machine which helps developers create and launch applications with smart contract functionality.

Smart contracts are publicly verifiable codes that automates agreements between two or more parties. Basically, these codes self-execute encoded actions when predetermined conditions are met.

Staking is a process of earning yield on your idle crypto assets by locking them in a crypto protocol for a specified duration as a means of contributing to its security. Ethereum transitioned from a Proof-of-Work (PoW) to a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism on September 15, 2022, in an event christened “The Merge.” The Merge was a key part of Ethereum's roadmap to achieve high-level scalability, decentralization and security while remaining sustainable. Unlike PoW, which requires the use of expensive hardware, PoS reduces the barrier of entry for validators by leveraging the use of crypto tokens as the core foundation of its consensus process.

Gas is the unit for measuring transaction fees that users pay for conducting transactions on Ethereum. During periods of network congestion, gas can be extremely high, causing validators to prioritize transactions based on their fees.
