Silver: Frequently Asked Questions

Widely traded by investors, Silver is a precious metal with a long history as both a store of value and a medium of exchange. While it is less popular than Gold, traders may choose Silver for portfolio diversification, its intrinsic value or its potential to act as a hedge during periods of high inflation. Exposure can be gained by purchasing physical Silver coins or bars, or by trading investment vehicles such as Exchange Traded Funds that track its price in international markets.

A broad range of influences can drive Silver prices. Its safe-haven appeal can push prices higher during geopolitical instability or amid fears of a deep recession, though the effect is less pronounced than for Gold. Lower interest rates generally support Silver because it offers no yield. Since Silver is priced in dollars (XAG/USD), movements in the US Dollar (USD) also matter: dollar strength tends to restrain Silver prices, while a weaker dollar is likely to lift them. Investment demand, recycling rates and mine supply can influence prices as well, with Silver far more abundant than Gold.

Industrial demand can lift Silver prices when it surges, while a fall in demand tends to pull prices lower. Silver’s extensive industrial use, notably in electronics and solar energy, reflects its electrical conductivity, which ranks among the highest of all metals and exceeds that of Copper and Gold. Economic developments in the US, China and India can also cause price fluctuations. Large industrial sectors in the US and, especially, China use Silver across a range of processes, while Indian consumers’ demand for Silver jewellery also has an important role in determining prices.

Given their similar status as safe-haven assets, Silver generally tracks movements in Gold and typically rises when Gold prices advance. Their relative valuation may be assessed using the Gold/Silver ratio, which measures the ounces of Silver needed to equal the value of one ounce of Gold. A high ratio may be viewed by some investors as a sign that Silver is undervalued or Gold is overvalued. Conversely, a low ratio might indicate that Gold is undervalued compared with Silver.
