Modest gains in the US Dollar (USD) against the Swiss Franc (CHF) on Thursday reflect a calm market following the US Federal Reserve (Fed) meeting. At 0.8285, USD/CHF retains its near-term uptrend, with Wednesday’s pullback from 0.8313 having found support above earlier highs around 0.8270.

Markets interpreted Chairman Kevin Warsh’s remarks as slightly dovish after the Fed held interest rates steady on Wednesday, in line with expectations. Warsh declined to confirm a December rate hike but expressed confidence that monetary policy was beginning to take effect. He also indicated that the bank might bring inflation back to its 2% target without undermining growth or having to “throw people out of work”.
Pressure on the Swiss Franc increased after Wednesday’s ZEW Survey showed that Switzerland’s economic expectations for the next six months had weakened in October to their lowest level since March.
Mixed momentum signals accompany a mildly bullish bias in USD/CHF at 0.8285. While the 4-hour Relative Strength Index (14) remains in positive territory at 56, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator has edged below zero. This points to a loss of upward momentum rather than an outright trend reversal.
So far, selling pressure has been held above the October 19 high around 0.8270. This area is blocking a move towards the October 25 low near 0.8230, followed by the key support zone between 0.8180 and 0.8190.
Wednesday’s high near 0.8315 provides the first resistance level on the upside. A break above it would open the way towards the 17-month highs around 0.8400.
